Wind - Induced Structural Failures

Shedding beyond ASCE 7

Presented By:  Sumanth Cheruku, Pivot Engineers

Abstract:

ASCE 7 wind loads are prescribed on the premise that structures experience little to no aerodynamic effects. However, the structural characteristics that are most susceptible to such behavior are not well discussed, especially for non-building structures. Direct application of these provisions with an incomplete understanding of the inherent limitations led to unexpected failures due to across-wind loading, vortex shedding, or aerodynamic instabilities.

This presentation will examine the aerodynamic phenomena affecting structures, primarily non-building, and describe the system characteristics that prompt catastrophic wind-induced excitations while discussing the underlying structural assumptions in the application of ASCE 7 wind demands to structural design and analysis. Two case studies will be presented: the first will address progressive failure at a utility scale PV solar farm during a below design wind event while the second study will examine conditions leading to vortex shedding from an industrial stack.
