Dear Members:

The next meeting of the SEAoT San Antonio Chapter will be held on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022.  We will be hosting our Chapter meeting at Blanco BBQ.

Topic: Does my project have Mass Concrete? Mitigating thermal cracking and delayed ettringite formation

Summary: When concrete is mixed, a chemical reaction occurs between the cement and water that generates heat (i.e., heat of hydration). For large concrete elements designated as mass concrete, a substantial amount of heat can be generated. The American Concrete Institute, however, does not specifically define the size limits of mass concrete. As a result, the specifier for the project is responsible for determining what constitutes “mass concrete”. This presentation will discuss factors that contribute to heat generation and concerns associated with mass concrete (e.g., thermal cracking, delayed ettringite formation). In addition, the critical components of a mass concrete thermal control plan will be described. Finally, attendees will be introduced to various methods of temperature control (e.g., using low-heat materials, pre/post-cooling techniques, and application of surface insulation) and when their use is appropriate. Case studies will be used to illustrate the concepts presented. This presentation will benefit structural engineers and anyone who has wondered if their project needed a thermal control plan.

Presenter: Jacob L. Borgerson, Ph.D., P.E. is a concrete consultant with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. Borgerson received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Borgerson specializes in providing concrete construction expertise in multiple areas including cracking, placement/finishing defects, low compressive strength, construction practices, mass concrete, ready-mix operations, specifications, field testing, and repair of existing structures. He is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and Structural Engineers Association of Texas (SEAoT). In addition, he serves on ACI Committees 207 Mass Concrete and 117 Tolerances for Concrete Construction. He is a licensed professional engineer in multiple states including Texas.
